Mara Day Celebration
The County Government of Bomet wishes to welcome all stakeholders and partners in the conservation of the Mara River Basin as well as members of the public to the annual Mara Day celebrations 2016 to be held in Bomet town on Thursday the 15th September 2016 at IAAF Bomet Stadium starting at 8AM. The annual event now in its 5th year is celebrated under the auspices of the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) and seeks to create awareness among stakeholders on the importance of the Mara River Basin and its resources, promote river bank protection and improve waste water management practices. This year’s theme being ‘Mara Conservation, My Responsibility’, the County Government of Bomet through the Directorate of Environment has since inception made it its responsibility to protect the Mara River Basin through planting of trees in the catchment area, promote soil and water conservation along the two tributaries that make the Mara River and developed Mara Basin Land Use Management Plan.
The Mara River Basin is shared between Kenya and Tanzania and is critical for the survival of the Masai Mara Game Reserve on the Kenyan side and Serengeti National Park on the Tanzanian side. That Mara Day celebration is designed to coincide with the wildebeest migration phenomenon from Serengeti to Mara serves as a poignant reminder to all of us to take greater responsibility in conserving the Mara River Basin ecosystem.
